I’m so proud of you. Knock it off.

Every once in awhile I hear someone use the phrase “I’m so proud of you” and my skin crawls. I know not everyone feels this way, but to me, it sounds condescending. It makes me feel seven years old. It makes me feel like the speaker is applauding me for improving myself and rising to his/her own standards that are obviously higher than my own.

Unless the action is something that the speaker has been personally helping me to overcome, with lessons, reminders, advice, whatever–unless the speaker has actively participated and has a stake in my accomplishment, however small or large it is, then the speaker has no right to claim ownership to anything I do. It is not his/hers to take pride in.

My sister is the only person allowed to say that and not make me want to punch something (usually). My boss is allowed to say it ’cause he’s my boss. If you’re not one of them, please find something else to say.

Wigglebutt, wigglebutt!

This post has little to nothing to do with wigglebutts, but that’s what we like to call my nephew sometimes, so it seemed like a nice random post title for today.

This “posting every day” thing really isn’t working out too well, is it? Well, the year is still young, hopefully my posting ethic will mature right along with it.

Today’s WW meeting was good, in that I lost about a pound and a half–that’s over five pounds lost now, woo! Five pounds in a month is a tad slower than I’d like, but every loss is a good loss, so whatevs. I really need to get me some mason jars, though, as I think this idea is awesome and would help to motivate me, especially now that I can immediately put five buttons/chips/marbles/etc. into the “Pounds Lost” jar. (I, too, originally saw this idea on Pinterest, but I’m too lazy to find the original source.)

My plan for the rest of today is to work on updating a client’s website, replacing most of the Flash objects with javascript/html5 scripts–yet more evidence that Flash is indeed on its way out. That makes me sad, ’cause I’m pretty good at hand-coding in Actionscript 3, and not so good at all at coding in javascript. Time to update that skill set, I guess.

And once that’s done (the client site, not the skill set upgrade), I have two eps of Lost Girl left, which is DEVASTATING to me, ’cause I can’t find the current season eps anywhere online–not Hulu, not Amazon, not even Syfy’s website. NO FAIRS! Not everyone has cable, Syfy! WTF?!

So, that’s my day. I’d hoped to work on my bear, but once again I forgot to print out any copies of the original, and my freehand bears really really suck, so, no bear for me.

Happy Saturday to y’all!

My failure to paint

I wanted to paint this weekend, but I couldn’t settle on a subject, which is what I’m finding to be the hardest part of this new hobby of mine. That, and the fact that my last two paintings (the Japanese Maple and a portrait of my nephew) came out so good that I’m now afraid of future failures.

I have a Pinterest board where I save photos of things I might want to paint someday. When I’m feeling this urge to paint, I troll the board for hours, trying to pick one thing to commit to canvas, but I have undone myself, ’cause I want to paint them all. The ones that came closest to reality this weekend were a cat on a bicycle in the snow and a cat climbing up someone’s leg. I guess I was in a cat mood.

Sadly, neither became a painting this weekend. Instead I read more of Two Graves, and watched a lot of football. Maybe next weekend.

The upside of spam

For some reason this blog is getting tons more spam comments than my knitting blog. On the bright side, though, it reminds me that hey, I need to post here more often!

Right now I’m sitting on my couch, basking in the sun streaming from the window, listening to the soft breathing of Zeva sleeping next to me, and trying to motivate myself to dry my hair. I have to leave soon to meet my tax accountant, and I’m terribly nervous about it. Claris, she who referred me, assures me he is a magic man who is well worth the $300, but what if I’m a special case that he can’t help and I end up shelling out the $300 PLUS a gazillion extra tax dollars? What if all the prep work I did for the past two weeks was all wrong and he has to start from scratch? What if…. What if…. Yeah, I’m a master at the what if.

ION, from my position on the couch I can see the blanket and three scarves that I need to photograph and blog about, so y’all can see that I haven’t been just lazy lately. Soon, my pretties, soon….

Man, this site needs work!

Neglect, neglect, yadda yadda.

I pulled my blog up to look at some of the widgets for another site I’ll be working on soon, and realized how very out of date this thing is, and not just the posts. For one thing, one of my favorite yarn stores closed last summer, so I have to remove that link. My bio needs an upgrade, and honestly, this whole site needs a facelift.

Sadly, my life these days is way to the busy. Work is swamped, personal time is usually spent on my current freelance project, and any other time leftover I’d rather spend as far away from my laptop as possible. (Seriously, I finished four books last weekend, three of which I’d also started last weekend.)

But soon, I promise, my dear two or three readers. Of course, I also need to upgrade JaneEspenson.com…. *sigh*

Just not enough time, dammit.

And in knitting news, I’ve been scrambling away at scarves, scarves and more scarves–and haven’t taken a pic of a single one, dammit. I suck. Someday that’ll change. I hope.

Until then, a pic. No blog post is complete without a pic.

Lioness

Isn’t she beautiful? I went to the San Diego Wild Animal Park two weeks ago with my sister and b-i-l, and this lioness was just hanging out on a crate right next to the observation window of the lion hangout. What a ham!
