I’m so proud of you. Knock it off.

Every once in awhile I hear someone use the phrase “I’m so proud of you” and my skin crawls. I know not everyone feels this way, but to me, it sounds condescending. It makes me feel seven years old. It makes me feel like the speaker is applauding me for improving myself and rising to his/her own standards that are obviously higher than my own.

Unless the action is something that the speaker has been personally helping me to overcome, with lessons, reminders, advice, whatever–unless the speaker has actively participated and has a stake in my accomplishment, however small or large it is, then the speaker has no right to claim ownership to anything I do. It is not his/hers to take pride in.

My sister is the only person allowed to say that and not make me want to punch something (usually). My boss is allowed to say it ’cause he’s my boss. If you’re not one of them, please find something else to say.

Sleepy Friday

Yeesh! All the late nights this week caught up to me today–slept until eleven, had breakfast, then took a nap before my 2pm appointment. I don’t think it was enough, ’cause it felt like the walk across the parking lot was 20 miles instead of, you know, a parking lot. Then the Coffee Bean gave me a regular latte instead of vanilla, so that happened. Blech.

But at least I got in some practice at the pool hall after my appointment, which was necessary since I’d missed league this week thanks to excessive working. I practiced draw shots and shots on balls frozen on the rail (which I used to be good at, but have been sucking mightily at lately).

Mostly I’m just happy to be home, chilling on the couch and watching more of Lost Girl. (Don’t judge me.)

Thank gawd it’s only Friday!

At last

Today we launched the redesign of our company’s blog:  The Iris

I was just a small part of the team that put this together (and at least a month early, I might add), but in the past two days the labor pains were killer for us all. So glad it’s out the door and ready for more upgrades next week. 😀

La la la

At work, QAing our latest project and adding more tasks to our developer’s to do list. It’s freezing here, but I have my hot chocolate to keep my hands warm.

Last night I played Mah Jonng for the first time. Easy enough game, but very complicated sets–my brain is still spinning a bit. Looking forward to playing it again, though.

That’s pretty much all I have for today. Here, have a picture of Jack!

I now know what an “appositive” is.

No thanks to the many dictionary definitions I found:

An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it. The appositive can be a short or long combination of words. (http://www.chompchomp.com/terms/appositive.htm)

Apposition is a grammatical construction in which two elements, normally noun phrases, are placed side by side, with one element serving to define or modify the other. When this device is used, the two elements are said to be in apposition. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apposition)

A noun, noun phrase, or series of nouns placed next to another word or phrase to identify or rename it. (http://grammar.about.com/od/ab/g/apposterm.htm)

Basically, it’s a noun or noun phrase used as an adjective. Ta da!
